Saudade

The Portuguese have a word — saudade — for the feeling of longing for something you may never have had. Fado is saudade made sound.

Amália Rodrigues sang it for sixty years. Her voice made grown men weep in silence. The Salazar dictatorship tried to co-opt her; she sang anyway. She hid dissidents in her house during the Estado Novo. She denied it until her death.

The sealed letter contains coordinates, codes, and a single instruction:

"The songs were not only songs. Follow them from the Alfama to the river. You will find what saudade truly means."

The Alfama district — Lisbon's oldest, clinging to the hillside above the Tagus. Every fado house in the city began here.
