The Requiem was never finished. Mozart collapsed in November 1791 with the Lacrimosa — the twelfth movement — only eight bars complete. His student Süssmayr completed it from sketches after his death.
Or so the story goes.
A musicologist at the Vienna Philharmonic has found something troubling in the Süssmayr manuscripts: a watermark that doesn't match any known Viennese paper mill from the 1790s. Someone added pages that weren't Mozart's — and changed something in the process.
